Building a future-proof e-learning platform

Replacing interactive Flash media with HTML5 technology, enabling cross-device and cross-platform support.

In the first half of 2014 we started working with Dutch Learning Company (DLC) on their platform called IedereenEHBO.nl ("Everybody First Aid"), which is listed in the Deloitte Technology Fast50. It is the first fully accredited e-learning platform for first aid courses, adhering to (inter-)national standards set by the Red Cross.

An integral part of the IedereenEHBO.nl platform is the interactive online learning environment, called the course player. It enables users to learn the theory of first aid, by means of multimedia content and exam questions. Earlier versions of the course player were created with Adobe Flash, an aging web technology that isn't supported anymore on tablets and smartphones. As mobile devices are increasingly used online, it became apparent that a new course player was needed. As DLC was very close to launching a large nationwide marketing campaign, there was also a sense of urgency.

Our team took on the challenge to replace the course player and worked closely with the DLC content team, following a very tight schedule. As a result, we managed to rebuild the entire course player from scratch, using modern web technologies (HTML5), making the course player cross-device and cross-platform compatible. Moreover, we finished on time, right before the campaign kick-off. The renewed course player is still in use today and helps to deliver first aid courses to more than 40.000 students in The Netherlands.

“They were able to develop a new e-learning player within a very short timeframe. I will hire them again in a heartbeat.”
